Qualitative Reasoning with Spatially Distributed Parameters

چکیده

This paper presents work on modelling the qualitative behaviour of physical systems of spatially distributed parameters. The distribution of each parameter is given as a set of observation points. A metric diagram is constructed by defining a connectivity structure on the point set. The metric diagram is used to construct a topological map that represents the distribution of the parameter as a pattern of contiguous regions. The regions represent values in the l)arameter’s quantity space, which is a discretization of its value domain. Topological combinations of parameter distributions are used to infer the distributions of nonobserved parameters according to models of parameter correspondences, e.g. qualitative versions of equations. The spatial evolution of the system is inferred by matching the scenario’s parameter patterns against modelled patterns of physical processes. The al)proach is suitable for modelling common-sense reasoning in the natural sciences, e.g. meteorology, agriculture, climate studies and natural resource management.

Qualitative Spatial Reasoning: Framework and Frontiers

Spatial reasoning is a diverse topic: what might different spatial tasks have in common? One task where substantial progress has been made is qualitative spatial reasoning about motion. Unlike qualitative dynamics, purely qualitative spatial representations have not proven fruitful. Instead, a diagrammatic representation appears to be necessary. This paper begins by outlining the Metric Diagram...

Influence-based model decomposition for reasoning about spatially distributed physical systems

Many important science and engineering applications, such as regulating the temperature distribution over a semiconductor wafer and controlling the noise from a photocopy machine, require interpreting distributed data and designing decentralized controllers for spatially distributed systems. Developing effective computational techniques for representing and reasoning about these systems, which ...

The Spatial Interaction Laboratory - A Distributed Middleware and Qualitative Representation for Ambient Intelligence

Personal communication and relationships within spatially distributed or separated groups can be difficult to establish and maintain. A promising approach investigated with respect to this problem are ambient intelligence and smart environments equipped with perception and communication technology. These technologies require a standardized way to access sensors, actuators, and to develop applic...

Parallel Fuzzy Qualitative Reasoning

Qualitative Reasoning offers an approach to analyse system behaviours where standard numerical techniques are impossible or impractical. The theory behind Qualitative Reasoning is very simple, however current implementations are not very efficient. We have developed a Qualitative Reasoning engine with a novel parallel abstract architecture. Recognising several stages within the engine to be exe...

Learning New Spatially-Oriented Game-Playing Agents through Experience

As they gain expertise in problem solving, people increasingly rely on patterns and spatially-oriented reasoning. This paper describes the integration of an associative visual pattern classifier and the automated acquisition of new, spatially-oriented reasoning agents that simulate such behavior. They are incorporated into a game-learning program whose architecture robustly combines agents with...
